How to make turkey burgers
- Mix ground turkey: in a large mixing bowl, combine the turkey, egg whites and bread crumbs.
- Season turkey mixture: sprinkle in 1 tablespoon jerk seasoning along with 1 chopped green onion and combine gently. Place on a plate and refrigerate for at least 5 minutes.
- Make the Pineapple Slaw: combine the pineapple, pepper, 3 green onions, napa cabbage and mix.
- Let the slaw marinate: Squeeze lime juice over slaw and mix in salt, pepper, jerk seasoning and honey. Allow to set in refrigerator until burgers are completely cooked.
- Make turkey burger patties: Divide ground turkey mixture into 4 equal portions and patty into burgers. Before cooking burgers, sprinkle remaining jerk seasoning over booth sides of burgers.
- Prepare the grill: To prepare burgers, you can either cook on a grill or in a cast iron skillet. If cooking on grill, make sure grill is at least 375°. Spray burgers lightly with cooking spray or brush with vegetable oil.
- Cook burgers: Cook turkey burgers for approximately 4 minutes on each side or until they have reached an internal temperature of 165°.
- Build the burgers: Place burgers on buns and top with slaw and your favorite condiments (we like a little mayo on ours).
Variations
- SAVE TIME: make the Jerk Seasoning ahead of time, or use store-bought jerk seasoning.
- CHICKEN BURGER: this recipe works just as well for ground chicken. Try it!
- LOW CARB: use whole wheat buns or gluten free buns. We also like to use whole wheat pita bread or English muffins
- GLUTEN FREE (NO CARB): go without the bun Serve burger on top of a Crunchy Asian Salad instead. You can also use gluten-free panko.

Top tip
Don't press down on burgers when you are grilling. This pushes all of the juice (and flavor) out, leaving you with a dry burger.
Storage
- MEAL PREP: freeze turkey burgers (extra raw patties) in an airtight container. We recommend wrapping each one separately in plastic wrap. Thaw them completely in the refrigerator before you're ready to serve, then follow cooking instructions.
- STORE LEFTOVER BURGERS (minus buns and pineapple slaw) in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- STORE PINEAPPLE SLAW in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Do not freeze.
FAQ
Including the bun and toppings, we calculated each burger to have about 370 calories. It also packs almost 30 grams of lean protein.
Ground turkey is usually healthier than ground beef because it is leaner in fat. We use 93% lean / 7% fat ground turkey when we are staying health conscious.
We use egg whites and panko bread crumbs to bind this burger together. This also helps to create a juicy bite.
