Wine and Beer. Whether you like one, the other, or both, who would ever think to combine the two? We thought exactly the same thing, until we tried this Belgian Beer Sangria recipe. The idea had been swirling around in my head ever since the days of creating our Iceberg Margarita, which combines the beautiful flavors of a margarita with a bubbly, light lager.

The light and subtle sweetness of a Belgian Wheat Beer mixes perfectly with fruit and wine. And much like our Frozen Rosé Drink, it's a light, refreshing sip on a summer day.

Ingredients

  • PEACHES: fresh peaches, diced
  • STRAWBERRIES: fresh strawberries, sliced
  • CHERRIES: fresh cherries, pitted and halved. We used bing cherries, but you can use any type of fresh cherry.
  • LIMES: fresh limes, cut into small pieces
  • LEMONS: fresh lemons, cut into small pieces
  • WHITE WINE: we find that a light, crisp white wine (like Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, or Riesling) works best for Sangria.
  • BEER: we like a wheat beer, like Tröegs Dream Weaver. Any wheat beer will work: Hefeweizen, Allagash White, Blue Moon
  • CRANBERRY JUICE: cranberry juice cocktail adds the right pop of color
  • SUGAR: granulated sugar (for the simple syrup)
  • WATER: flat water (for the simple syrup)

Top tip

Making sangria is a great way to use fruit in the fridge before it goes bad. If you don't have peaches, try oranges, nectarines, or plums. Nibbling on the wine-soaked fruit is just as rewarding as the Beer Sangria itself.

FAQ

What kind of beer is best for sangria?

The best beers for sangria are light and crisp varieties, such as Belgian wheat beers, lagers, or pilsners. These types of beer provide a refreshing base that pairs well with fruit.

What fruits are best for beer sangria?

Popular fruits for beer sangria include oranges, lemons, limes, strawberries, peaches, and berries. These fruits add vibrant colors and fresh flavors to the drink. Feel free to experiment with your favorite fruits to create your ideal blend.

How long does beer sangria last?

Beer sangria is best enjoyed fresh, but it can last in the refrigerator for up to two days. After this period, the carbonation from the beer will start to diminish, and the fruit may become mushy. For the best results, prepare beer sangria shortly before serving.

You can prepare the fruit and wine mixture in advance, but it's best to add the beer just before serving to maintain its carbonation. If you mix the beer too early, it may go flat.
